Scooters are an affordable, convenient, and extremely fun way to get around your neighborhood and your city. Also known as a “moped,” the scooter descends from the same type of innovation that created the motorcycle, but scooters are smaller and less powerful, which makes them easier to ride and more practical for many people.

However, if you’re interested in buying a scooter, you probably want to know what type of investment you’re about to make. We’ve broken down some of the typical costs associated with owning a scooter to help you out.

Sticker Price

Scooter prices vary widely, depending on the brand, whether you’re buying it new or used, and the types of features the scooter has. You could find a scooter for as little as $1400 or they might be as much as $13,500. You may want to use financing options that allow you to opt for a low monthly payment that fits your budget.

Riding Gear

In order to safely ride your scooter, you’ll also need some riding gear. A helmet is the most crucial piece of equipment you can buy, and it will typically run you anywhere from $130 to $260. Helmets last for about five years, unless you get into an accident and need to replace them.

You should also look into getting riding boots, which will be similar in cost to a helmet, and gloves, which will cost around $70 for a good pair.

Insurance

Most jurisdictions will require you to insure your scooter before you can ride it on public thoroughfares. If you already have a car insurance policy, your insurer may be able to offer you a package deal that also covers your scooter. Insuring a scooter will cost less than insuring a car or even a motorcycle, so you can expect to spend less than $130 on basic coverage.

Upkeep

Finally, you’ll want to make sure that you’re budgeting for maintenance needs. Scooters are low-maintenance compared to cars, and they can be quite easy for you to maintain yourself for a few dollars. You’ll still want to get in touch with the Alberta Cycle service department at least once a year to schedule your regular professional maintenance check-up, though, to make sure that everything is going well.
