A History of Moto Guzzi® Motorcycles

For just over 100 years, one of the leading European names in motorcycle manufacturing has been Moto Guzzi®. This Italian company made waves in its own country before taking over Europe and then the rest of the world. Their motorcycles are used on and off the racetrack, and they’re a popular choice for beginner and experienced riders alike. Read on to learn more about where these bikes came from.

Early Years

Moto Guzzi® motorcycles have their beginnings in the city of Genoa, Italy, in 1921. The company was initially called Società Anonima Moto Guzzi, named after one of its three founders: Carlo Guzzi, an engineer. His compatriots were Giovanni Ravelli, a motorcycle racer and pilot, and Giorgio Parodi, a financier. Unfortunately, Ravelli died as the first World War ended in a plane crash, and the company logo remembers him with a pair of eagle’s wings.

First Motorcycles

The very first Moto Guzzi® motorcycle to roll off assembly lines was the 8 HP Normale, swiftly followed by the G.T. “Norge” model in 1928. “Norge” is a nickname that nods to the Scandinavian nation’s then-recent trek to the Arctic Circle. The company swiftly entered the motorsports market and won many races, including the 1921 Targa Florio. Moto Guzzi got out of the competition world in 1957, but they obtained 14 world GP championships, along with 11 Tourist Trophies, during their decades in racing.

Ownership Issues

Moto Guzzi has been owned by several different companies, due to various financial and logistical difficulties. SEIMM, a state-controlled receiver, took over the company from the original owners in 1967. SEIMM was then purchased by DTI in 1973, which allowed for Moto Guzzi to join other classic Italian brands like Maserati and Benelli.

In 2000, Ivano Beggio of Aprilia Motorcycles chose to acquire the company before Aprilia was sold to Piaggio, where Moto Guzzi® bikes remain a popular fixture of the company catalog.
