  • Edmonton biologist on international team monitoring disappearance of Arctic tundra in Canada’s Yukon
University of Alberta biologist Isla Myers-Smith and her colleague were taking down their research camp in the Ruby Mountain Range when a snowstorm with winds of near hurricane force blew down their tent and sent their electric generator tumbling down a hillside. For nearly three days, Myers-Smith and Helen Wheeler hunkered down, eating what little food they had and watching nervously as the batteries of their satellite phone got weaker and weaker.

  • Last call for the York Hotel
Days after their February 1943 wedding, Lac La Biche newlyweds Dan and Helen Beniuk took a friend’s suggestion and spent their honeymoon at the York Hotel, booking a third-storey suite that overlooked 96th Street into downtown Edmonton.

  • Iris Evans vows to retread, not retire
Iris Evans seems genuinely puzzled. Everywhere she goes these days, people in her beloved Sherwood Park are congratulating her on her retirement, after 15 impressive years in the legislature. “Isn’t that strange? Why would they do that?”

The Wildrose party's path to power in Alberta, once seemingly clear, has become a bit more thorny of late.

  • Lees: Putting a grand on the line for weight-loss wager
There were a number of reasons why I placed a $1,000 bet on dropping 14 pounds by June 16. I ignored the people dancing on a table and cries Friday of, “You’ll never do it,” from Yianni Psalios, with whom I was sharing spanakopita, shrimp, keftdes (Greek meat balls) and lamb chops at his new The Meze By Koutouki restaurant on 82nd Avenue and 111th Street.

  • Edmonton a “favourite” on the hip-hop dance circuit
The Shaw played host to a wedding and a hip-hop convention Saturday afternoon, the result a head-tilting juxtaposition of apparel. Sightings of cocktail dresses and suits were rare, though, swallowed up in a sea of sweatpants, T-shirts, unlaced oversized runners and flat-brimmed ball caps.

  • Diary was no wimpy kid on library’s lending list
And the winner of the award for most popular DVD at the Edmonton Public Library goes to — Up.
